I drove an 86 Maxim X 700 until someone on a cell ran a stop and killed my bike (I walked for about five seconds till the adrenalin ran out, then the broken hip had to start healing). I just found and bought an 85 Maxim 700 with 7000 original miles ($2000 plus $500 shipping). It's exactly what I wanted, so I think it's a good deal (subjective). Just wanting some objective opinions--good deal, and would you have bought it (a few scratches and dings, but otherwise excellent shape)? Thanks for this site (perfect for me) and for any and all opinions!

Got Pics? Sounds fair but then I'm no expert.

Pics would help--but my camera isn't working anymore (should have another one in about three days tho;-) and I'll post them then. I wore out my other camera taking pics of extremely unusual phenomena in my home (I'm an open-minded skeptic, so I won't bother speculating), and they were so frequent I stopped taking them. I plan on taking pictures of bike, family, mountains and friends when my new camera 'arrives'.

I uploaded about four of them...some of them are very unusual. I lost interest in taking these tho. Yes, some very strange phenomena in this house, but I like a nice, normal life (well, as 'normal' as I can get it). I have pics of my wrecked Maxim, but don't even want to look at it (sad memories).

I uploaded one picture of my wrecked Maxim. Since it came with plugs designed for a 750 I kept using them, though I later found out it was a 700. There was a lot more damage than was apparent. I'm still riding though (have far greater awareness) I don't need to mention this, but I will since I've been through it--watch out especially from the side streets. It is often far more dangerous on those streets less traveled because people in cars are less aware of traffic, and while you have speed on your side, you cannot manuever away from someone running a stop sign. Do not assume that they are looking out for you--quite often they are not.

Too bad about your "X" - hope you will/have recovered from your injuries.

the Bike looks in pretty bad shape - but you should be adviced there seems to be quite a few reuseable parts still on it - for spares or sale(they´re getting hard to come by, you know).

If your new bike is a non-"X", engine parts aren´t interchangeable but most other parts will be.

Good luck with it and be safe (know what you mean with the greater awareness - I got hit 8with low speed, luckily) when passing a u-turner, who didn´t see me..)

I had the bike for awhile, and then a friend wanted to make it into a project (I told him about the parts scarcity). He gave up and took it to his brother, where I assume it is now. Since I've got another Maxim, I'm attempting to locate the old one. I does hurt me every time I see it as I spent a lot of time riding, and I thought I'd never find a Maxim anywhere. As 'fate' would have it, I did, and those parts would come in very handy. Yes, the front wheel and handlebars, and entire bike was 'compacted'. I have no idea how I walked away from that one (violated a number of laws of physics), and there are more than a few people who think I'm insane to start riding again. I was knocked unconscious, then got up and walked away (tho my hip was broken and my ability to walk was extremely temporary (adrenalin?). I still have the residual back effects from the accident, but other than the people thinking I'm insane issue, doing fine. Must be something that gets into you--I just flat out love the feeling of freedom, and it comes as close to flying as you can get on the ground. But my caution level on streets less traveled, and assumption that I've been seen are greatly increased.
Just wondering what the main difference in engines are. My previous Maxim X had five valves, etc., they both have and inline 4.

"But my caution level on streets less traveled, and assumption that I've been seen are greatly increased."

This didn't come out right, I need to review before I submit. I meant to write that my caution level is increased on these side streets especially, and my assumptions of being seen are decreased to the point of being gone. That is one of the worst errors we make, and many people warned me. There is a balance we must find though. OVERLY cautious drivers can cause accidents (I suspect they are responsible for more than the confident ones). There are loads of people driving who are not paying attention to what they're doing, and this is increasing all the time. A motor vehicle can be a deadly weapon in their control. That said, if riding a bike makes me insane I stand guilty.

I added some more pics from my wrecked Maxim. I'm looking forward to sharing some pics of the one I bought, but won't have another camera for a few days ;-) I'm glad this forum was started--there are people all over the world that have the same interest in these bikes. What is it that would do that? I wonder why Yamaha hasn't picked up on this yet--they have to know that this type of bike is a winner.
