I ordered 2 sets of brushes for my xj550 alternator from z1enterprises.com. I tried to install them and realized that they are too small and wont fit anywhere. The website said they were made for xj550's. Whats up?
    Heres the link: http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=2673

    Am I overlooking something obvious?

Can you take a pic of where you tried to install them at for some of the more experienced fellows here? If you are sure that you had the right spot and everything, then not sure.... I will try to find out more on it.

I found some drill motor brushes at ACE, they werent the right size but I used some sand paper to size it for diamater and length.

Works good as the factory brushes.

that's odd, I ordered those same brushes not long ago and they fit just fine.

They should fit like a champ. All the XJ-series bike should use the same brushes/holders.

only thing I noticed with them is they are exactly the same length as the ones I took out...so now I have a spare set. I just replaced them because of age considerations. I had no clue if they were originals or not.

They should work. Can you post a picture of them?

The replacement brushes are about 1mm shorter than the originals, and do not have a "wear line" scribed into them (which you can do for yourself---gently---before install if you find that useful). Other than those minor issues, they fit and work like a champ!

yeah, my stock ones have the line scribed in them and it is about 5mm from the end...approximately.

The new ones were the same length, so I am guessing I only had 1mm of wear on them.

wait...do you mean alternator? The brushes you ordered are for the alternator, not the starter...totally different animal.

The starter brushes ARE different between the 550 motors and all others....550's are all by their lonesomes as far as fit and size is concerned. However, the items linked to in the original post ARE alternator brushes.
