Does anyone have experience in painting over chrome? Can it be done? Do I have to grind it down to bear metal? What kind of paint would be the best to use? I'm thinking about painting some chrome muffler to flat black.

This is completely out of my field of expertise.
    Thanks

im no expert either but I recently started a similar project. i have a set of chrome handlebars that i want black. i am using an angle grinder to scuff off all of the chrome so the paint will stick. my plan is to get all the chrome off and put on a good coat of primer and one or two coats of black.
    good luck

You dont need to scuff or anything on chrome... You need to clean the surface with isopropil alcohol and use an adhesion promoter (makes the surfave tacky) then you can spray your color right over that...

Or strip it with muriatic ( hydrochloric) acid. You can get it at any hardware store or pool supply house.

I've painted over Chrome. I just sanded over it with a 3-M pad (fine) and used primer first, then wet sanded with 1000 grit before painting. I like to clearcoat over my paint too, to protect the finish. >PD<

this was chrome until yesterday. I cut the grab bar off of it and ground it down until shaped how I wanted it, then filed it smooth, then sanded whole piece with 150 grit and cleaned with rubbing alcohol. Sprayed with 99 cent primer two light coats then gloss black wal-mart spray paint three medium coats. Then I took the part after a half an hour or so and baked it at 185 degrees in a electric toaster oven I have for parts curing. Tough and glossy.
