Hi,all, been reading with interest, all the comments, fixes, etc regarding petcock/fuel tap problems. My fuel tap on my xj400 was letitng fuel through when the engine was not running,eg, knackered!!!.I tried to clean it and made it worse.I purchased a new standard on/off/reserve non-vaccum tap 34mm hole centres, fitted straight on,works fine at all speeds, conditions etc.The cost was £8.00 (gbp). The point being, there is no need at all for the vaccum tap,you just need to turn on/off as appropriate, and the reserve function works fine too!!
    Cheers all

I agree, mine was replaced with a Pingel. No need to turn it off at all if you carbs don't leak though. I don't bother to turn mine off.

Mine only runs right when set to Prime... In the on position it stumbles and wont idle... Guess I need to think about replacing or rebuilding it? Mines stock but I have no clue as to how to fix it! any pointers?

Were you having similar issues? Either way I guess it needs to be fixed!

I was having chronic leak issues. I had replaced the vacuum diaphragm thingie on the inboard portion of the tap, as well as the piece with 5 holes behind the selector lever (came with the kit). That having failed, per his instructions, I wet sanded the back of the selector lever flat, and replaced both the wave washer and the selector lever o-ring, adding silicone grease in the process.

Worst case scenario, he can either sell you another one, or rebuild yours.

You don't even have to remove it from the tank. Two screws hold on the plate that presses in the selector lever, and four more on the back side hold the cover plate for the vacuum diaphragm. If I had a spare, I'd snap some pictures and send them off in your direction.

But, to answer your original question, definitely drain the tank. Once you start pulling the thing apart, there will be nothing to prevent the gas from coming out anyway.

Check the vacuum line before tearing into the fuel valve. It can be clogged or collapse on itself if the wrong type of hose.
