    Hi,

I am having trouble locating the pilot mixture adjustment screws on my 85 xj700 maxim. I think the carbs are Hitachis and the plugs are probably hidden but there are several cap-looking holes and I don't want to drill the wrong ones out. If someone has some pictures or a better description of the locations I would greatly appreciate it. On one photo I saw they were below the choke but my carbs don't look like the picture.

Another newbie question. If there is fuel in my inline fuel filter at night and then less the next day is it leaking into the cylinders (and crankcase) or is the small amount in the hose/filter settling into the bowls?

    Thanks very much everyone.

do your carbs look something like this
the idle mixture screw is circled, yours won't be that tall (it's a long story)
    but thats where they are
if you think gas is moving in the fuel line overnight the petcock could be leaking a little, pull the fuel line off and see if it drips gas it might be time for attention before it gets worse

    Hey Pelock,

Your pictures helped alot! Other than their altitude, their location matches a plug-like hole on my carbs.

Petcock is good (third one on the bike). I do not have a very good sense of smell when it comes to identifying the presence of gas in the crankcase, it just smells like oil to me. Assuming the petcock is working well, would the 'weight' or pressure of the gas in the fuel line/filter be enough to push through the carbs and into the cylinders and down into the crankcase if there was one or more poorly seated valve needles? Could the fuel just be settling into carbs? The last time I changed my oil (three times in 100 miles out of pure paranoia) I made sure to add 2.5-2.75 quarts so that the oil would be in the middle of the viewing window, but just like the time before, the oil level is now close to the top of the viewing window. As a matter of fact, it was up to the top the very next day. At that rate I would expect it to have overflowed by now! I inspected the oil after emptying it and it did not seem to have fuel in it. I check the oil on the centerstand as often as I can (I can't really get it on the stand by myself). These are the circumstances surrounding my paranoia. I have had several people sniff my crank case/case cap and most (the most trustworthy) said it smelled only of oil. Is there a procedure for checking the oil level that I don't know about?

    Thanks very much.

This is where you'll find it.
Sometimes you won't see the Screw ... like in the photo ... but, there will be a Brass Plug preventing access to it.

If you have the Plugs ... they'll have to come out.
That's good news and bad news; maybe.

The good news is if you drill-out the Plugs and Yank them out ... you'll have virgin Pilot Mixture Screws to adjust.

The bad news is you could wreck the Slot if you allow the drill bit to contact the very soft brass or bronze screw head.

    Thanks Rick,

Great pic. But what of my mysteriously increasing oil? (sorry, I have a habit of asking multiple questions, I'll try to keep my posts more concentrated from now on).

    Peace

Take the Oil Filler Cap off.
Smell the contents of the Crankcase.
If you smell gas ... you have a serious matter.

You will have to find the source of the Fuel getting leaked-into the Crankcase.
    Fuel Petcock set to Prime
    Petcock leaking.
    Carb Floats Sticking

You have to find the source.
You have to change the oil and filter
You have to stop the leak

You have got some work to do!
