    Not a crazy question.
Do you have copies of both the 81 and 82 wiring harness schematics? If you don't, you need to get them.
Retrofitting the newer harness on the 81 shouldn't be too difficult, you just have to bypass the sidestand relay, sidestand switch, and your diode block is different (retain the newer block). Once you figure out all of that, you should be golden. Best of luck!

I would be interested in pictures of your old harness and the new one to gauge if there is a chance that the old harness can be salvaged and/or patched up using the new harness. Of course I can modify the newer harness as well. Get back to us on which path you wish to take.

Thanks Robert i today compared the wires and the only thing different like you said was an extra harness in the head light different type of diode, harness for the sidestand switch, and an extra relay im guessing for the side stand switch not sure i really want to use the newer one because the 81 harness is in pretty bad shape lots of crumbling harnesses and oxidation is pretty bad too and you said i should retain the new diode block well i kinda messed up the 81 diode cause i thought i had a burned out diode so i tore of the rubber and messed up the resistor in it actually i tore it out so it would crank cause with the diode in i only got an oil light with no start or anything take out the diode hit the button and it would crank try to start with diode in oil light but yeah ill take some pictures of both the harnesses and upload them for you ill get back with you as time permits hopefully tommorrow

I'm too lazy to read through the wiring diagrams tonite, but we looked into this for someone trying to use an 81 harness on an 82 (maybe you guys should swap!).

    If I recall correctly:

There is an extra wire from the tci/coil to run the electrnic tach on the 82. Can just not use it, or upgrade your tach.

There are a couple extra wires and sockets to support the sidestand switch and the sidestand relay. The system works by grounding the signal to the TCI if the sidestand is down and the bike is in gear. I think it also links back through the safety relay to keep you from cranking if the sidestand is down and the bike is in gear. Removing the sidestand relay disables all the sidestand protection functions, so if you don't put a relay in the socket you should have no problem.

Bottom line, I think you can use it as is.

ok about this tach since i have a mechanical now it will still work right? Also you say if I take out the relay for the side stand i need to do nothing else. WOW sounds like a pretty easy thing to do. Thanks for the help and ill keep you posted on the progress
