My 750 has Mac 4-1 exhaust, courtesy of the PO. I'm not too thrilled with the looks, but they sound ok.. I've upped the pilots one size (41), everything else is stock. So far no problems.

If your XJ runs great, why mess with success? Going to a 4-1 WILL require retuning your carbs, possibly rejetting, and there is no hard and fast set of specs, it varies by system. You also may lose some overall performance in exchange for a bit more poke in one part of the rev range.

tuning the carbs is no issue. I would like to get better exhaust tone
and more weight savings. Everyone i ride with has loud bikes and you cant even hear mine.LOL
bottom line I want more power

I doubt you will get more power with an aftermarket exhaust. If you go with more open exhaust, you will have to modify the intake as well. Then, you will have to completely re-tune the carbs (jets, needles etc). Then, you will probably find that you actually have less power in various parts of the power band, and maybe just a bit more in others... I guess if you go all the way and port the valve body, increase compression, run high-octane... maybe you'll get a few extra HP.

If you just want LOUDER, there are options. If you want more power, you'd be better off getting a new bike...

yeah you are probably right, i just like to hop stuff up.
I am going to increase the intake and retune the carbs this winter.
prbably get some of the crome pods on ebay. The wow factor is better with headers any way. And it should definatley be louder than the stock collection box

I think you probably do get a little more power from the 4 into 1 aftermarket pipes.
What you've done is increased the exhaust flow, causing a lean condition, more power.

If you want more power then going to a 4 into 1 exhaust is a good way to start, you will need to rejet but it will be worth it. and mac makes a good system with several options for looks check out dennis kirk .com. they have pipes and jet kits for the 750 maxim.

just remember an engine is an air pump, the more air and fuel you can get in and out the more power you will make.
