Leafing through the service manual last night I noticed it calls for 5k plug caps on 1&4 and 10k caps on 2&3. I have seen discussion about caps here but never have I seen this mentioned.

Why would there be different caps on 2&3?

What would be the effect of them all being the same?

I'm curios and I have a feeling mine have been replaced along the line and I have no idea if they are correct. I can check them of course and will when I get a chance.

Its a very good question...unfortunately I am not an electrical guy. I hope others will chime in. My Max-X has 10k caps across the board but supposedly 5k replacement caps will work just fine. Maybe 5k of resistance is just not that big a deal. But the gearheads at Yammie must have had a reason to spec different ratings on your bike. I am going to buy a set of 5k caps just as an experiment and see what happens.

I did some research. The resister caps are t protect the on board computers etc on newer bikes and for RF interference. But they can also change the spark characteristics. Higher resistance means longer but less powerful spark. It's interesting but I still wonder why the difference on 2&3.

    Pretty good article http://www.motorcycleproject.com/motorc ... etech.html

I wonder if weaker spark on 2&3 makes them run cooler, since they're inside and not exposed to as much air as 1&4. I've heard of people tuning the mixture on inner cylinders a bit richer, but I suppose this would work too.

IM GOING TO COMPLETLY REMOVE ALL OF MINE AND PUT ACCEL BOOT JACKETS ON THEM, AND PUT A RF SHIELD ( LEAD FOIL WRAP) AROUND THE COMPUTER.

Like Stero, I'm going to assume that, like the aircooled VW, the ignition intensity on 2&3 would be reduced to reduce cylinder temps on the inside cylinders. It makes sense given the reduced airflow and increased cylinder jacketing mass.
