well not sure, but I might be selling my 82 XJ 750J, I will be deploying to Iraq in a few weeks, and currently debating on getting rid of my baby. I would like to get a newer bike when I get back towards the end of the year, and not sure if I want it to sit for 9-10 months with out being rode.

I guess my question is what would it be worth, I have a Vetter Windjammer Fairing on it, and also have all the original lighting equipment with it. this bike has the original tool kit, chain lock, and owners manual.

As far as for Maintance, I have kept track of what I have done to it, and being the 3rd owner, I can swear to the maintance that it has had over the past 20 years, I bought this bike from my uncle who put approx 45 to 50K on it and his neighbor bought it brand new in '82.

Probably worth more to you than you could sell it for. Drain the tank and carbs, fog it and put the battery on a maintainer. That way, you'll have something to ride when you get home while you look for that new bike.

Please accept my gratitude for your service! SALUTE!

    Stay safe.

I agree with MiCarl, it's cheaper to keep her. And if I was closer to GA, I'd store it for you, since you will be pretecting my freedom, thank you.

well then I guess I have a few more questions,

    Avg Cost if known
    Rebuild Engine
    Repaint Frame

What things would be good to do to restore her to "like new" condition.

I know as of right now I want to:
    Resink/reset Carbs
Replace Carb Boots, (orig on engine)
    Adjust Valves and Shims
    New Exhaust

Very good Clean and Polish of the Chrome/Alloy Parts

any other suggestions feel free to throw 2 cents worth in, If I can't use them, I'll give you change back

Oh Pics of her in gallery

My thanks to you for your service Andrew, keep your head down.
As for your baby, you really ought to preserve her and wait it out.
Repainting the frame should run you about $400-500 depending on type of paint and color. Do be sure to have it bead-blasted to remove any rust.
Rebuilding the engine is not a cheap proposition. Be prepaired to fork out $1500 or more. At the rates folks charge to rebuild bike motors, you'd think they were made of gold.
All the rest of the wish list falls into the catagory of DIY, provided you have the time and access.
Do be sure to pack in extra panty hose and condoms, my brother swore up and down it was the best advice he could give when he went. Something to do with keeping the grit out of his weapons. Peaceful journey and a speedy safe return.

As you were, there, Soldier. Hold the fort and the bike! Mothball the scooter. Disconnect the gas feed line off the Petcock. Put-on a section of hose that you can close-off with a bolt and hose clamp it up for no leaks.

Run the bike until it dies of fuel starvation.
Pull the Carb drain screws and spray some carb cleaner up in there to duche 'em out.

Take the battery out and get a few kids to help you do a MacGuires and Armoral festival.

Park. Cover and let sit for 9 months or so.
    Return safe.
Pull engine. Place on blanket in trunk of car. Road trip.
    Bring engine here.

We'll rebuild it for considerably LESS than $1,500.00 -- that's for DAMN sure!

    Hydrate.
    Stay sharp and alert.
Keep your STENCIL covered and stand at the back of the line!
I gotcher back -- when you git back!

well word is in, I should be leaving around the end of the month, and will be gone for around 9mo to a year depending on if were exteded.

As for the bike, looks like I'll be keeping it till at least I return, have a few soldiers that might be interested in her. If not new carb boots, and carb sink will follow, not to mention a new rear tire.

Well, Sarge ... from the looks of things, The Commander in Chief is sending-over some more guys to help you out. Looks like these guys are going to know their way around, too. Some of them have already been over there a couple of times, already.

It really sucks having to be in-the-crotch, get short, go home, get settled back-in and relaxed; then find-out that YOU have to GO BACK and do some more fighting for YOUR Country ... because, the guys who should be helping you pick-up the slack ... are slackin' and gold-brickin', sittin' at home, pretending to be part of the "Fightin' Elite" on their PlayStations.

All the Big Brass are complaining about not having a big enough Armed Force, now, Sarge. So, maybe it won't be too long before somebody at the Pentagon decides to grab the little hammer and break the glass, and pull down the lever and get the situation declared the emergency it really is! Then, maybe all the sittin'-on-their G8, G9, and G-10 butts -- Selective Service Agency Employees, can see if they can find the keys to their Office doors ... if they can even remember where their offices are!

    Hang in there, Sarge.
    Your Country is behind you.
A little too far behind to help-out, right now ... but, I'm hoping that everybody who "Sent the Message to Washington" by giving control of Congress to the Democrat's, will deduce that Washington didn't get the message ... and decide to GO to Washington and personally deliver the message that "The War on Terror" is being fought by our National Guard and Reserves who are being told it is their duty -- over and over, again!

And I ... for one, think that it is a duty more than a few should bear!

THANKS EVERYONE, I and rest of my brothers in arms apprecate the support that is given by those that understand that eventhough they don't agree with the war, they understand and support what we do and why were around.

RickCoMatic, I know what you mean, most of my division is that additional 21K, turns out that all of us are going some time in the next year, good thing for me and my soldiers, is that my unit is already there, we only have to do part of the time. What a good way to get back in to the Army Life, major deployment right off the bat. But hey I knew it when I decided to shake off the 2 years of Civilian Life and come back in to retire.

and Chief, Thanks for your 20+ years of service.

If I can do it while there, I'll post a few good pictures of the area.
