I was reading a post about buying XJs which said that whilst they are straightforward to maintain, don't think that because they are cheap to buy, they will be cheap to maintain.

The article went on to warn about having to put right the "Work" of previous owners. How true.

I was fitting my new air filter - and removing the pantyhose that one of the previous owners thought would make a good air filter - when I looked at the regulator. I have already noticed the tape where the multipin connector should be and that it is mounted behind the air cleaner and not on the side.

It then dawned on me it is actually only stuffed in there and the PO has "Lost" the two mounting screws. These must be worth all of 10 pence (14cents?) each. If the PO wouldnt spend 20 pence on screws, what other horrors will I find?

He did supply me with a new seat cover so perhaps he thought things you can see were more important??!!

When I first worked on my '01 Triumph Thunderbird Sport, I found the PO thought a lawnmower filter made a great air fiter for the TBS! ;^(

when I got my bike, I couldnt figure out why I was getting about 20mpg. opened the bowls and all the jets were loose or fell in the bowl.

The PO on the newest bike I bought didnt even notice that the front wheel was different from the rear wheel (seems there's an XS1100 front end on my XJ650) and he couldnt figure out why the caliper he bought wouldnt fit.

But in all fairness the guy showed me everything he had found that was wrong and was honest enough to say that it was beyond him. Thanks be to XJBIKES its not for me!!

    Geez helmet,

How did it even run? Wouldn't that effectively prevent the gasoline from becoming an aerosol?

When I got my current bike, after realizing I'd be in for a project with all of the overspray resulting from repainting the body parts with them left ON the bike, along with the missing axle pinch bolt, found a few other surprises. The p.o. thought the bike would be better off without all of those pesky fuses! Why not just take them out and solder the wires together! What a great idea! Now you don't have to worry about that finicky old fuse panel. This of course resulted in another find, some nice and "toasty" wires here and there throughout the bike. Well, like I said, I knew I was in for a project, and boy did I get it!

When I was looking at WyldMax to buy it, the PO told me how good the tires were. Well while the tread looked good, the front tire was (is) out of round and the back tire had cracking on the sidewalls that looks like a dry creek bed.
