This goes out to any of you gurus....

I have a problem when Im shifting.....

Ok, when I shift, the shift lever does not ... recenter....reset its self so I can just shift to the next gear up or down, I have to bring it back to what I think of as its center before I can shift again.

I figure Im going to have to open the cover up to fix this, what Im wondering is what any of you think or may know what the problem is,

It doesnt jump out of gear, it just makes it hard at times knowing which gear Im in because of all of the pedal movement I guess....and it can be embarassing..besides its something thats not working like it should, and I want to fix it.

I cant get it on here, but Im looking at Page 24 of the Parts Diagrams in the manual on the XJCD and I THINK it may be #2 the tension spring...

If this is the diagram you're talking about it's more likely to be spring #6. (If #4 breaks it won't shift anymore period.)

    Ahhhhh...ok.

    Thank you for the replies.

Robert, was it a difficult replacement? It doesnt look like it should be...but...I defer to someone who has dealt with it..

And I should add that part to my Chacal Shopping List...lets see and if not a new #10, at least a gasket for the cover.

    Thanks again guys!!!

Not hard at all with a new spring, gasket and seal. Should take you a whopping 45 minutes if you are handy with tools. Don't forget to use anti-seize on the bolts.

45 minutes if you don't have the scrape the gasket :D - took me forever to get the thing off even with gasket remover spray. There are 2 other gaskets that are part of the crankcase vent you may consider changing too and maybe the seal for the shifter. I had my seal go bad and went ahead and did all 3 gaskets too.

Have to drain the oil and I had to loosen the foot peg too - I think it was to get to a bolt or get the cover off - don't remember which....

    Not a bad job though.

Cool! Seeing how I have the engine sitting out waiting for me to order its new bits and pieces...the foot peg should be no problem.

And thank you for getting back Robert, I tend to over analyze that leads to procrastination.
