Hey all...I have an '82 XJ 1100 and I'm sloooowly cleaning it up and was wondering what i should expect to happen (parts, thingies dropping out) if I remove the bottom pan off the engine. I don't have a manual for it yet...just luck no parts have fallen on the floor yet. 8O

Well if all is well inside you should not see any parts falling out. If your unlucky you might find pieces of the chain guide in the pan. Look at the gears and see if you look up in there and see the dogs on the gears. If they are worn you might want to look at the fix on the XS1100 forum.

Pulling the pan just to have a look is probably a good idea just as a general preventative maintenance idea. I'm going to do that on mine simply to see it anything is sitting in there that shouldn't be there after 25 years of running.

I personally subscribe to the "Uncle Ernie" rule:

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You guys are masochists. I wouldn't open up a perfectly healthy motor "just because."

I know it ain't broken...but it is really ugly compared to what I've polished so far.
