i want to put on something thats not so thick (im short and could use that inch or 2 pretty badly) but im wondering if i can just mount another one, or if i need to do more in terms of custom fitting either the seat, or the frame area? do they make any aftermarket seats that pop right on?

You can put shorter shocks on it if you don't find the right seat. You can use Sportster shocks or Suzuki Savage 650 shocks, they are 10&1/2 to 11 inches.

You can also keep an eye out for the the 1980 xj650 seat (they may have used that one on the 1981 also.........) That seat is easily recognizeable-- it looks like the driver seat is separate from the passenger seat, even though it is still a one-piece unit, AND the driver's seat has a much deeper scallop to it.

If you go to my gallery, take a look at the 83 xj650 Maxim full-dress. THAT seat is the kind I'm talking about. I put that one on just to change the look a bit more.

Another seat that you could look for, would be the xj650 king/queen seat with the high-extended back. the driver's seat is also scalloped a bit deeper, and is similar to the one mentioned above.

Pick up another seat (or use yours) and send it to http://www.sargentcycle.com/custserv.htm and have them "recontour" it for you.

Not prohibitively expensive; and they do excellent work. I've had them do two seats for me so far; one a stock "re-cover" and one a recontour (in my case, adding height.)

thanks for the ideas guys! i have a good buddy who does industrial sewing, and he was into making bmx bike covers for awhile. he thinks he is the man for a re-contouring/recovering job and i may have him give that a go. worse case scenario with that option would be i just need to buy another seat but i will def be keeping my eyes peeled for the seats you guys mentioned, and possibly the shocks too. def appreciate the feedback :)
