I finally got rid of all my rattles a few weeks ago and I have been prepping the bike tank and side covers for paint. Then yesterday a new noise reared it's ugly head. It sounds like a click of some sort that only shows up occasionally. Then tonight I went to go for a ride and when I pushed the starter button nothing happened. I pop started it and revved it a little bit turned it off and then tried to start it again and ba-da-boom it took right off. I suspect maybe a loose wire but honestly I have no idea where to start looking, and since I am no automotive genius I thought I would see if someone could steer me in the right direction.

something similar like that happened to me, mine turned out to be a fuse, it was still ok but went a bit powdery and lost contact, pulled them out, wiped them and good as new, this may not be your problem but its something to check and its free.

If you go through your wiring connections and expose clean metal (file, dremmel, or sand paper) then smear with Di-electric grease you should be golden. Never hurts to upgrade your fuse box if you haven't already and check over the wires for any shorts. Switch may be giving up the ghost also. Best of luck wiring problems are annoying!

Clean the contacts on your start switch. Even if it isn't your problem they are most likely corroded and dirty from age. Easy to do and one thing to rule out in the troubleshooting process. A small brass wire brush works perfect to clean it up.

So it acted up again and I gave the voltage regulator a slight tap and it seemed to solve the problem. Do I need to replace the regulator or is it just coincidence it worked?

The only time I hear the clicking is while I am riding and it's only occasionally....
