The manual says to align the "T" with the stationary pointer to get to TDC for #1 and #4. Then apparently I am supposed to rotate 180 degrees at a time and adjust the other valves. I don't seem to be getting #1 or #4 in the proper position when lining up the "T". Can't I simply get the cams in the proper position visually and take the reading?

I tend to do just one at a time. Though you can get two at a time if you turn the engine just right. The cam lobe doesn't have to be exactly 180deg from the valve shim just +/- ~1deg. I found there wasn't any significant difference if the cam lobe was a hair off.

Yes you can. As long as the cam lobe is pointing away from the valve "straight up" in relation to the valve angle you should be fine. Is that the factory book that has you looking to line up the "T" mark?

once you find tdc some valve will be ready to check every 90 deg but degree wheels aren't used here so you have to guess.
notice how easy it is to bend that pointer?

It appears to be. Titled Tech-CD Service and Repair Manual, XJ 700 Maxim Service Manual 1985-1986. It is a CD copy I got off the internet.

Anyway, I checked the valves while I had the carbs off and they are still in spec. I had added a shim or two a few months ago and decided to check them again before adjusting the carbs.
