More questions concerning my 1982 XJ650J,

In the Haynes book it specifically says that the valve lash on the XJ650J is 0.16~0.20mm for both intake and exhaust. Inside the left side cover it says the intake lash is supposed to be 0.11~0.15mm on the intake and 0.16~0.20mm on the exhaust. SO, who's correct?

The plugs in the bike are NKG BPR7ES. The Haynes book says they are supposed to be NKG BP7ES. If this works like the old auto plugs were marked, the R would designate a resistor plug. Why would they put a resistor plug in a motorcycle, especially the Yamaha with its critical (?) voltage requirements? Again, who's correct?

The previous owner had been using Valvoline synthetic oil in the bike. Should I continue this practice or go to the old fashioned oil? It makes me no difference, I just want to use the best oil for the bike. Comments and suggestions would be appreciated. He just changed the oil before I bought the bike so I probably won't change it again until fall unless I do more riding than I think I'm going to.

Once more, thank you all for the help. I wouldn't be this far were it not for you all.

    Cheers,

    Phil

Thank you MiCarl, I guess thats the definitive answer.

I see you are in Livonia. I used to fly out of Willow Run quite a bit. Haven't been up that way in years but used to be quite familiar with it.

    Cheers,

I'd dump the R plugs at first opportunity. They are adding more resistance to the ignition than is needed, robbing you of power and easy starts.

nice info--does almost all of it cross-apply to 750's ?
    and why do 1 and 4 get 5 K OHM's and 2&3 get 10 K ???
is it due to plug wire length??
aren't these coils mostly identical ?

On my 81 Xj650 the spark plug "caps" read like yours 5k ohms on 1&4 and 10K ohms on 2&3.
I don't know what the reasoning for them using different values. :?:

I replaced my caps with new ngk ones I bought off ebay and they were the 5K ohm type. My bike runs its' As* off! So I don't think it is much of a problem. I replaced mine because they were in rough shape and a little loose feeling on the plugs. The new ones needed the piece that screws on the end of the plug in place. Alot tighter fit that way!
