To do both calipers, you need 2 sets, or a total of 4 brake pads.

That's a decent price, unless you get hosed on shipping.

    kindof on topic.
i had my bike on center stand this weekend and had more weight on rear so front tire was off ground. so i spun it....forward was fine, but for some reason i decided to spin backwards and it would move. well with a lot of force i could.
so i started thinking no wonder i have a hard time backing it out of my dirt floor garage.
question... why does it spin ok forward and turns very hard backwards.

Before I go out searching, how likely is it that a local parts store (Oreilly's, NAPA, Advance Auto, etc.) would have pads for the front and shoes for the rear of my 82' XJ650? They are drum brakes in the rear right?

Sounds like one or both calipers pads are dragging just slightly, and have worn-in going forward -- so when you spin it backwards the slightly dragging pads grab harder. Other thoughts?

And to answer Gremlin's question -- not likely. Most don't carry parts for motorcycles, and even if they do not for 25 year old ones. The drum shoes for our bikes are a bit hard to find, but places like the one posted above have them at a good price.

The rears are drum brakes, and are you sure you need rear brake shoes?. Pull the rear wheel and check the lining thickness.

Your brakes are on page 25 of the EBC catalog.
