82 750 Maxim... The stock gauges/computer, and indicators are all gone. I have everything rewired (led for hi beam, neutral, turn indicators and oil, new speedo and tach...).. I just need to wire up my led for the oil light. Looking at the schematic, the oil sensor wire is red/black which I have, but the oil light doesn't come on at all, whne I turn the key on or when cranking the stqarter. After doing some searching I think I understand... the oil light is just a sensor (that the motor has oil...) and is not a pressure sensor. So as long as I have oil in the bike, the light will never come on, correct? I guess I could drain the oil and see if the light comes on when I turn on the key....but I figured it would be easier to ask the gurus here :D Will the oil light ever come on other than when the oil level drops too low??
    TIA

On my XJ650, the oil light comes on while cranking as a lamp test.

There is a diode connecting the starting circuit to the oil lamp circuit which allows current to flow back to earth while cranking as a lamp test ...

If you don't require the test indication, just leave the diode out and everything else should work fine, it does on my 750.

Is there anyway to add an actual low pressure sensor to trigger a warning light, or better yet a pressure guage? Id like to see a small oil pressure guage hard mounted to the motor like the harley guys use. Id also like to see a head temp guage like VW guys use... Ideas?

the problem is where to measure the pressure. There doesn't seem to be any factory-designed place to mount a sensor. If you have an oil cooler, you could add a T to the line running to the cooler, and mount the sensor in the T. If you don't have an oil cooler, I think you'd need to get and install the oil cooler adapter piece that fits behind the oil filter housing, and then run a line from output to input with a T for the sensor.
