My maxim has been leaking ever since I have had the bike, today I took it apart after looking at a forum on this site. After removing it, I noticed that an edge of the housing has a little bit of teeth marks in it or something. Does this look as though it needs replacing? Or should I just get the new seal and throw it in? I would hate to put this back in and for it to leak again. Thanks everyone!

Well, for starters, that part is no longer available except through salvage or possibly an NOS find.

Those marks look like "PO" tracks, and they're not in a spot that would be any cause for concern.

I would take a small sharp file and clean it up a little, and be good to go.

Be sure you replace the seal AND the special ("D"-section) o-ring on the body.

well I figured it wouldnt be too much of a problem, after all isnt that what the oil seal is for? I might be going to a salvage yard this weekend, maybe I will grab one if it is fairly cheap, cheaper than new seals. Thanks bigfitz! I appreciate your help. They do have this part for sale on bikebandit though.

    Really?

    Try ordering it.

Bike Bandit's OEM parts fiche is a shortcut to an outdated Yamaha fiche. A lot of stuff they claim to have will never arrive. It will get back ordered, then eventually cancelled. Honest. (Been there...)

If you want Yamaha "factory" parts, I highly recommend http://www.babbittsonline.com/pages/par ... fault.aspx

But then again, I don't recommend using "Yamaha" parts when chacal carries the correct parts for way less. I was FLABBERGASTED at the price difference for things like some gaskets, oil filters, etc.

MamaYama sees you coming. $15 for a FRAM filter is highway robbery.

I'm not saying "El Bandito" doesn't have a decent deal now and then; I've taken advantage of a couple of their sales on accessories before, with good results. I just learned early on that they're not the best source for actual parts...

I honestly would have never bought XJ's #2 and #3 if I hadn't joined the forum and started getting parts from chacal.

about that D section O'ring mentioned above. I have an Oring assortment and ended up making my own. you take the original, put it on a shaft, (not the shaft in the photo above), then put the new oring on the shaft about 2"'s away. grind the new one on the bench ginder and you have a new custom made seal. if you try to push it in and it don't fit, back to the grinder. while it's shaving down the Oring it'll want to turn the shaft in your hand, Let it happen, it's the best way. Then when your done, turn the Oring inside out (flat side down in the groove) and place in the groove. Haven't had a leak since
