gettin to the carb and exhaust part of my bike here in my repair/rebuild/check everything process.

the PO, or PPO put a mac 4-in-1 exhaust on it, and k&N pods, but i don't know if it was ever re-jetted. seemed to run fine, hard to start when cold though. like around 50 F*. Is there any way to check what is currently installed? I'm rather clueless about what jetting really is, and the bike has gotten me looking into carbs and how they work, but i'm still pretty much a doofus to it all.

when i first got it the oil was full of gas, so one of the floats or float needles are def bad, So a carb rebuild, clean, full tune, and possible re-jet are infact in order. Yes valve shims are done.

one of my exhaust heads is mashed up pretty good, gonna see about cutting it and welding a patch to the thing, see how that works. other than that the exhaust is in pretty good shape.

Here is a link from our good friend Chacal:

http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=2 ... =jets.html and search for "what about pods"...

To check Jet sizes your only option is to pull the carb rack and take the float bowls off, the sizes are stamped into the jets themselves and may be legible, depending on condition.

Don't assume anything with a 500lb piece of two wheeled burning metal :p.

Have you checked your back brakes yet for delamination? the pad can come away from the shoe, seizing your back tire at speed! that's one of the most impt safety things to check. Don't forget to check your tires for cracks and age, they're no good after 5 years...

back to the engine, if you get it warmed up good and go for a quick spin check your plugs. if the insulators are paper bag brown i'd be in no rush to fool with the carbs. if they're white though you should remove the rack and start your carb cleaning journey...

alright, i did what you said, checked them out. The ground electrode/strap/pin/contact whatever you want to call it, was white. but nothing else. some gray on the insulator. It looks like, here i am, at the gates of o god shit i don't know what i'm doing. Never messed with carbs before except my three wheeler i had as a kid, had to clean it all the time due to a rusty gas tank.

i'm running two things that are going to effect me quite a bit, first, a mac 4into1 exhaust. then the pods.

sooo. man. I'm just, ughh. I understand that if i didn't have the pods, the exhaust wouldn't effect me too much, and it prob be alright. I may look into getting a stock airbox. or is their anyway to restrict the K&N's?

I believe you can re-install the airbox on secas, much easier than on the maxims (can anyone confirm?). i'd reconsider that if at all possible, even finding a used airbox if you don't have the original.

you might want to get a party pack of fuel jets, but i'd go +4 on the mains and +2 on teh idles at mimimum.

but first things first, i'd see about reverting back to the original airbox... you can still get the airbox boots that go to your carb as well. don't get too discouraged!
