Rear shoes have about 3.1mm of pad left. Planned on changing them but found out that the shoes are close to $40, not the $15 I was hoping for. Anyone know how thick they are to begin with? Should I just suck it up and change them?

I'm not sure how thick they're supposed to be, but brakes aren't really something to be frugal about. I would go ahead and replace them if you have any doubt as to their effectiveness. $40 is a good price for some peace of mind, in my opinion.

Pick at them and see if they're about to delaminate anyway that way you'll feel better. If you can start peeling them away from the backing plate with a fingernail, you needed to replace them anyway.

If they're still solidly glued, maybe they aren't the originals.

According to the factory book, you measure brake wear by measuring the OD of the shoes, on the drum, in 3 places: at the center and the edge of each shoe, measured straight across the CL to the other side.

    Brake diameter: 180mm (7.09")
    Replacement limit: 176mm MIN. (6.93")

3.1mm isn't a whole lot; if you have any reason at all to believe they are the originals, replace them on that fact alone.

No cheaping out on brakes. XJ law.

    Hi,

A brake shoes is the part of a braking system which carries the brake lining in the drum brakes used on automobiles, shoe carries the brake lining, which is riveted or glued to the shoes.
