I have 82,000 km+ (50,000 miles+) on the factory original rear shocks. They don't leak, but are certainly a lot softer and bouncier than when I got the bike in '87. As I'm not using the bike for more than urban commuting, I'm not overly concerned about performance but I'd like to swap over to a (confirmed) stiffer pair that has only 15,000 km (9,000 miles) from a wreck that sat for a while.

Only problem is, I'd like to refurbish them and use the nice "garage kept" chrome preload adjustment rings from the original set as the ones from the wreck's shocks are rust pitted well beyond cosmetic salvage.

So, it means a homemade spring compressing device and dis-assembly. Any advice on doing that, assuming its even worthwhile?
