My 1983 XJ550 Maxim has the original rear shocks. They have an irritable 'squeek' every time I get on and off the bike.

Other than losing weight, any suggestions? I've tried spraying lube into every area I can, and have lubed the mounting bushings.

Can the stock rear shocks be taken apart to rebuild/lubricate the piston inside?

Another option would be replacing. Anyone have suggestions for inexpensive (less than $125/pair) rear shocks that would:
    - keep the original all chrome look
    - be a good value
    - improve ride over the original, probably worn out shock
-preferably have the ability to preload

I've looked at Emgo progressive at the online auction site, all chrome online for about $100. Anyone have experience with them?
