...Is there any benefit(s) to having a larger rear tire than the stock size? Any pros/cons... Just a curiosity at this point. You see these Gixxer's, etc. that have these Mammoth boots on the back and wonder. Not to compare decades in technology; however larger rear tire may improve handling?

A larger than stock tire on the stock rim will offer no handling improvements and may even diminish handling. Putting a tire on a too narrow rim deforms the tire profile.

Current sportbikes run 180 or 190 width tires on 5.5" or 6" rims specifically designed for that size.

If you choose to use a bigger than stock tire, it's best to get a rim the tire fits.

And a different motorcycle to go with the rim because you aren't going to get a wider rim alongside the driveshaft.

You're right, the shaft drive could pose a problem. Clearance issues could limit your selection. That would also hold true for putting a wider tire on the stock rim.

I'm not sure about the XJ's, but I know you can get wider rims for the shaft-driven V Stars.
