    I brought a 1982 yamaha xj 650 maxim and i am currently redoing it i need carbs and other parts willing to pay.This is not easy for me as i am on disablity.i really need help with this and advice .it was a $100 dollar purchase and needs work will post pics for advice and opions thank you for reading this

    Congrads on the bike and it looks to be in okay shape, seen worse. Here is a link from this forum that you should read. If you have not done are restore on one of these bikes this is what you have to look forward too.

    For me it is all about the love of bring back a motorcycle from the end of life before parting out or worse the junk yard. So if you have the time, tools and money that the restore will need I always say go for it. Is the bike going to give you the excitement of a new motorcycle, no I don't think so. I get the natural high from the progress I made on the bike, trouble shooting and then the final first drive once all the safety checks have been done, love it. I tend to flip these bikes, once I have them back to road condition I look for the next one.

    Do what is right for your situation, just remember that you might not ever get your time and money back out of the bike. It is much for for the love of doing it, leaning along the way and satisfaction of finishing a project.

    I've brough two 650s back to life - one was way worse than yours.
    My advice - carbs is everything - did you get any - the can be cleaned and rebuilt, but you need care and patience, oh and the throttle seals are pricey.
    Then oil the bores - you can't put too much in, and turn the engine over by hand with the plugs out, three to 10 times.
    Then see if you can coax a spark - the safety relay can be shorted - link the red and white striped cores together.
    Make a fuel tank you can hang on the bars of from the ceiling - a pint is enough.
    Clean the old plugs, carbs on, making sure the open and close on the throttle, new battery - did I mention the fusebox?
    Crank it over, and smile. (Do this outside).
    Then its brakes, shocks and making it pretty.

    i have power compression all i need is carbs to see if it will fire up

    Ebay for a used set and rebuild. There is a member on here that rebuilds carbs for others, he may have a set to sell not sure. You can PM him on here @hogfiddles

    I fixed and ridden worse. It'll cost a lot less to fix up but assuming you need the usual tires, bearings, brake bits, etc. I tend to spend about $700 getting something back on the road. Sometimes its more, sometimes its less but its a good ballpark.

    I restored one of those, it was a great riding zippy and well balanced bike and wouldn't hesitate to do another.
