Hi all, like the tag line says, I rebuilt my gas cap and when I went to reinstall it, it is so tight that I cannot get it to latch inside the tank. It won't seat enough for the latches to engage.

Anybody ever have this problem? Any ideas?

    Thanks

Did you use the original seal springs as-is, or did you replace them or stretch them before reinstallation? I have to press down on the cap while turning the key to latch the ears.

The only thing I replaced was the rubber seal, the other seal was badly cracked and worn. The springs looked to be in decent condition, so I didn't mess with them, as did the latch springs, although I did clean them up a bit, I didn't stretch them.

And you are using the key to re-lock? It won't just press shut, you'll need to use the key; that's normal.

Did you get the whole seal assembly, the rubber ring bonded to the metal "cup" thing?

Fitz, yeah I was using the key and pressing very hard to seal it.
Also I did get the rubber seal assembly with the metal cup from Chacal.

Is it maybe not happily aligned?

What happens if you remove the fixing screw so it can "adjust its own position" a bit?

You may have installed the seal upside down...........

Fitz - even not mounted to the tank I can't get it to seat.

Len - I'm pretty sure that it was mounted correctly

I never trust anything anymore. (Sorry Len) but did you compare the old part to the new part. Some times we get parts with the right part number on the bag or box but the part inside may not be correct. You have to double check everything now these days.
