I have an 82 maxim 650. I am having the head shaved and was looking at redoing the valves. My bike has 32000 miles on it. One local shop says yes the other says no. Also, do the valves get shimmed or adjusted through rocker arms? This makes quite the price difference at the shop and they couldn't tell me with out looking it up.

Your valves are shimmed. The clearance should definitely be checked.

I'd have them lapped, and also put new seals on them since you've got it apart.

Perhaps new valve guides while you're in there, the extra cost is minimal given what you're doing.

And extend the service interval for these components a considerable distance!

Since the Head is off and its going to be shaved ... you might as well install new Valve Seals and have the Valve Job done while the New Seals are being installed.

    Remove Valves
Wire Brush Stems and Valve Faces removing all deposits.
Cut or Lap Valves in for Gas Tight Sealing
    Lube New Seals and Install
    De-carbon Combustion Chambers
    De-carbon Exhaust Ports.

    De-carbon Piston Crowns
    Polish Chambers and Crowns.

You'll be in the neighborhood just having the Head off.
Might as well visit the relatives while your in town!

    +1 on the whole job

You would be mad not to, the only extra cost being the new valve stem seals. Also, consider going for new valve springs as they are not that expensive.

The bike will thank you for it.

Be carefull.. Aged engines really do not like having a 'top end ' alone redone. Most any competent auto mechanic will refuse to do this.
Added efficiency/increased cylinder pressures do bad things to worn pistons rings and crank bearings.. from the 'as new loads' re-imposed on now out of spec bits.
Bikes?? who knows? apparently anything is OK.?
Your mileage is lowish (but then ..EVERY.. Old Bike I've seen in the last few years has 30/35,000 miles.. astonishing ain't it :) If accurate then you might be fine... or not... Certainly Know either way..in another couple of thousand miles.
    Gluck.
