First I would like to understand if the decals on the 82 XJ650 seca are painted on, or if they are simply glued on?? If they are glued on, could i use a heat gun and dental floss to saw them off? If anyone has attempted this I could use your thoughts on accomplishing a clean tank look without repainting the whole thing.

If they are anything like the SR500 or the Seca 550, and just decals, not "badges" Yamaha usually CLEAR COATED the tank decals (only.) For instance, both my Seca 550s ('81 and '83) have clear coat over the tank stripes but not over the decals on the sidecovers and tail cowl.

You can get a Spray-on Product from an AutoBody Supply Store that will remove the Vinyl decals without doing harm to the finish.

Thanks for the quick replies, I have a spare tank that I will test removing the decals.
