ok, so i dove in last night and replaced the friction plates (8) and metal plates (7) in my 85' xj700n. problem is it feels like the clutch is dragging a little causing it to be tough to get into neutral. i've adjusted and adjusted this thing over and over. i know it's adjusted to where i'm not running out of travel at the lever. it almost seems like before the outer plate on the clutch assy can be pulled out far enough to release the clutch 100%, then the rod with the teeth in it that pulls it out runs out of travel and hit's the outer case. make sense? i know i'm getting all the pull i can at the lever because if i take all but a very light bit of the slack out of the adjustment the clutch lever will come halfway in then stop. i swear it's because that rod is hitting the outer case and running out of room. almost like the clutch packs are too thick. any ideas?

    thanks

I think there is markings on the disks to line up in the basket [if original] but even if not , one just has to be in the wrong place and a slight warp and that will happen..or something to that effect .

you did check thicknesses and stuff to the old ones? . all i can think of.. also there is a large roller bearing behind the inner center hub too , see if its binding?...

on some of the tabs on the friction plates there were some markings but they differed from plate to plate (three of the plates were an old yammy part# and 5 were a superseded part# and those had different markings) so i didn't think orientation is an issue. they looked identical. i could be wrong though. they seemed to be symetrical all the way around and slid in to the outer notches without any binding there was an alignment mark on the clutch basket and the end plate that i made sure and lined up. took it apart twice just to make sure. everything went together great and seemed to all line perfectly so that's why i'm kinda stumped. i think i know what bearing you're talking about the one on the toothed shaft that pull the outer plate outwards? if so i checked that when i took it apart the second time. everything looked to be the same as the old parts but then again i didn't mic them though. i'm stumped. i wish i had a manual. waiting for the xj cd's to show up.

Ok , i realized later those little marks are mainly related to balancing....

bearing= no the one on/behind the clutch inner basket [big nut on gearbox input shaft] . in neutral clutch plates out spin inner hub , should have a no grumbly feel about it...good luck next time , as warpage or something in wrong somewhere i reckon...

well, i did tear it apart again last night. checked everything over and all looked good. happened to coincidentally check that bearing while i was in there. all good. oh well, might have got some friction plates or metals that aren't straight. i'll run it for now and see if it gets better or not. in theory if they're slightly warped they might straighten out over time.
