Just thought I would pass this on as a way of maintaining clean air to your carbs without spending a lot of money. I went to Canadian Tire and found an automotive air cleaner that was the same width as our stock air filter, but twice as long. After cutting the new filter to the right size, I removed the old filter from the plastic frame and using a tube of "GOOP", glued the new filter into the plastic frame. It fits and works perfectly and as the new filter was $8 and I get 2 Maxim-X filters out of it, my cost is $4 each. Not a bad deal eh?? :D

    Not bad!
If you want to never replace the filter EVER, just get some Uni foam and rip that dam paper out. Then glue in (GOOP) the foaminside the old frame. Now all you have to do is clean it and re-oil it. It will be the last filter you should ever need and you don't need to re-jet the carbs either.

Is Uni foam something special or just like the stuff you get for a humidifier? Maybe I wasn't as smart as I thought??

The stuff for a humidifier is probably alot different. It's made to hold water and no so much filter air. The Uni foam is made just for filtering air with smaller openings in it to trap air particles by using oil. You see it small engine shops (it's green) and they use it for all kinds of various engines (lawn equipment)
I've replaced all my air filters with it (cars, truck, both bikes, lawn tractor, etc.) and it works great. You can buy a sheet of it 1/2 - 3/4" thick about 2' x 12" for about $10. I get mine here at a local after market cycle shop, but you can order it from Dennis Kirk.

You have to replace the OEM type filter once a year i would say . I can't see paying 9 to 12 dollars for an air filter. so I bought the UNI foam air filter ( no humidifyer foam is less dense) Which uses Oil to trap dirt better . and can be used many times . Save yourself a bundle of cash get the uni air filter for 25 bucks and the oil / cleaner for 10 bucks and be done with buying air filters for a few years.

but thats just an amatures opinion on saving money.

9 to 12 bucks LOL I wish the X filters for some reason are more. I got one better and should have taken pics. I work at a body shop and they had an old K&N filter from a wrecked truck laying around the corner was ripped. I did the same cut the K&N down to the proper size once I was happy with the size and fit I then removed the stock filter tho it really didn't feel like any paper filter I have ever came across. and glued in the K&N material I have the cleaner and oil kit from previous vehicles so I am set for quite awhile. So far so good I have been running it for about two weeks now minus monday since there was snow on the roads.

Sorry that I never replied earlier, was away for a few days. The stock number for the long filter is 23-3191-2. Another number on the box is CA3373.

    Thanks man!

I'm planning to get the real thing soon, but this should keep me going for a while - now I can just place one big order with Chacal instead of several.
