    Hey XJ heads.

Not sure if this link was mentioned previously here on the forums, but I couldnt find anything using search.

    Replacement start buttons.

Hopefully this helps another member with a broken start button. I havent gone through the left controls yet, so maybe another member can confirm the horn button is identical.

    Enjoy.

    bookmarked!

thanks, as I was struggling with my start button late last week. but also found a faulty connection in the connector itself coming from control switchbox TO the wiring harness.

anybody got a right hand (start/killswitch) control box with good wiring available? rather than starting another thread, figured I ask on here since it is similarly related, sorta

On topic Question: Concerning the link, it states "Some models of Yamaha after 1985 started supplying a positive ground starter solenoid. These bikes will need to order the plastic buttons. I have them available for the same price. Make sure you specify plastic buttons"

Question: can someone verify this for me. I have an 82 XJ650J and would like the metal button, but dont want it screwing anything electrical up.

Yes, I know you would need the metal button. The wiring on these push buttons is "complete" when you "push" the contact(s) together, thus creating a circuit for the electricity to flow back & jump the solenoid to have enough 'boost' and crank over the starter.

The wiring on a 650 normally has black ground wire throughout the wiring harness itself. Wiring on a 550 does not incorporate a ground wire, rather the ground is just on the handlebar itself. I believe the ground in the wiring harness on a 650 was just an "added" safety feature... others may chime in

Regarding my connector: I don't know. I was getting so frustrated late last week that I told myself just to get another assembly. Narrowed down all my electrical gremlins & figured out the problem. I almost would rather get a working one though rather than trying to fix it. Hardly worth the time & effort if someone is able to help me out

    @Buffalony: Reproduction Decals

I've ordered circular ignition decal that goes around the ignition key as well as the handlebar decals/stickers from this small business in Canada. Excellent service and cheap! Can't beat the free shipping in a normal business envelope!

One note: the handlebar decals were very similar yet not identical. I had to order a set named from a Yamaha RD350 if I recall correctly. To view this set, click on the Decals link in upper left, then Yamaha, then click on "various warning & service labels" in the upper right corner of that page. $7 is worth a try and they look pretty good!

yeah that was the only thing missing if I recall. Not the end of the world in my opinion. afterall, its your choice but $7 shipped worldwide is worth it to me. In fact, I'll be ordering some more..."just-in-case"

True. I just gave a closer look and the choke stick is pretty good on this end so no biggie. How did they fit? Thanks for the link.

Looks like about 1/3 down page 2 -- but you may have to PM him for stickers, etc.

    Control Switch Hardware:

HCP1072 aftermarket control switch PUSHBUTTON & SPRING SET, this round black plastic button correctly replaces broken or missing original starter pushbutton (on the right side control switch) and horn pushbutton (on the LH control switch). Comes with the contact spring. Slightly longer than stock but fits and looks just great once installed. Fits all XJ550 and XJ650 (except Turbo) models: horn button on the left side switch unit, starter pushbutton on the right side switch.

BTW: What did you use to clean up the casted surfaces on your bike? Ours is filthy and in need of some tlc.

I have purchased from Reproduction Decals before for my 73 Suzuki. They do sell good stuff. The badges come from a company in Australia and they are the North America distributor for them.
As far as start buttons go my 83 XJ750K uses a SQUARE start button 8O ! Had to make up my own!!
