Replacing tach cable

    I have a new tach cable to install on my 82 650 Seca, as the old one developed a split and was leaking oil.

    Can I or should I use thread tape or grease on the ends? They still feel loose after hand-tightening but because they are knurled I don't think they are intended to be wrench-tightened...

    If your tach cable oil seals are good you can run the motor with no cable and not loose oil. So no additional seal needed. A good finger tight should be plenty.

    Lube the new cable with something other than WD40.

    Put a small "glop" of grease on the lower end.

    HOLD the flats on the sheath with a small wrench while tightening the knurled nut; this prevents "winding up" the sheath so the cable doesn't unscrew itself.

    Mine failed on both bikes within a few hundred miles of putting them back on the road.

    Brilliant link, thanks! It seems I now have some work ahead of me.

    I read somewhere that the cable was lubricated by engine oil, but this seems incorrect if the seals are doing their job - then no oil should be escaping?
