    Hey guys,
    Forum noob here.

I bought an 82 XJ650J for $750 ...had to invest $200 and time to get the get her running right, but what a gem it has been for the past year. Great commuter bike.

I had been having issues with my reserve on the tank.
Twice I ran out of fuel and it would not use the reserve gas I could see in the tank. I was convinced it was an issue within the petcock. I installed a new petcock assembly few nights ago ... and the same %$#@ thing happened. Fortunately in the driveway.

I took off the fuel line, set it to prime and out comes the fuel.
I had a cheap auto store in-line fuel filter which was preventing the fuel to reach the carbs. The filter is less than a year old. I'm guessing under vacuum assist it would work fine, but the little gravity pressure of reserve was not enough to do it. If I was smart ...I would have checked that before ordering a new petcock.

I ran a new line with no filter and reserve now works as it should.

Would you leave it with no filter or is there the "right" filter?
    Thoughts?
    Thanks
    -Greg

    Thanks Bill.

Good advice ... I'll look for another filter then.
It certainly easier changing a filter then cleaning carbs.

I'll test that reserve works on it.

    Thanks

Our local parts purveyor Chacal stocks inline 90-degree filters. I have one on my 750, and if you cut the one section right going to the t-inlet, you'll have a nice downhill slope on the fuel line.

    ------------

HCP2734 Aftermarket In-Line Fuel Filter, cone-shaped 2" long housing has a clear, see-through housing with a bronze mesh filter. This unit has 90-degree angled inlet and outlet tubes (pointed 90-degrees opposite of each other), which is useful in the "tight-squeeze" conditions that exist under some models! NOTE: the sintered bronze filter element goes TOWARDS the tank... meaning the 90-degree rotated (from the centerline) INPUT nipple (from the tank) is approximately 1" off the centerline of the housing. The entire housing -- including the inlet nipple, is about 2" wide, and -- including the outlet nipple -- is about 2-1/4" long. THIS IS THE MOST POPULAR STYLE TO USE FOR MOST XJ-SERIES BIKES, as the 90-degree turn that the filter inlet/outlet orientation provides serves to minimize the amount of fuel line bends that are necessary to route the fuel line from the petcock to the carb fuel inlet!

    $ 3.50

The $1.99 FRAM Universal Inline Fuel Filter is what I have on both my Bikes.
    Top of the line protection.
Priced to be exchanged as often as you might need too.

    I wouldn't run without one.
All these tanks are way over the rusting inside edge.

This begs the question "What are we all to do when we can't just spring for another used one off of flea-bay"?
I'm thinking ahead here so if anyone has ideas, I'd like to hear them.

When the time comes that there is sufficient demand ... somebody will get tooled-up and manufacturer a replacement.
