On my 82 650J, about how many miles should I be getting in the reserve position?

Depends on your usual mileage. The reserve position is the last 3 litres of fuel in the tank (roughly).
On my bike, I average 42mpg. That's roughly 18 kilometers per litre.
Thus reserve is good for something over 50 kms (~31 miles) for me.

Your bike will likely be different - It also depends on if you're city or highway riding, how heavy you are on the throttle, etc...
