I cleaned and gapped my plugs and noticed they were the correct resistor type (Resistor for UK models anyway) so i was curious about the caps. I checked them with a multimeter and they are about 12k ohms.

I wonder if its not a good idea to have both but what is the general view?

Not all XJs are normally 5K.

The 550s run 10K caps and non-resistor plugs, the bigger bikes generally use the 5K caps.

Your 12K measured caps were/are probably 10K caps; you could certainly run non-resistor plugs without issue.

What does the owners manual say? (I'm curious now, gotta go dig out the Clymer book.)

Resistor Plugs aren't going to cause you any Ignition difficulty.
They're supposed to make listening too the AM Radio and CB a little more tolerable and less annoying.

I don't know how Spark Plugs make listening to Talk Radio and hearing: "Breaker One-Nine for a Smokey Report" less annoying.

If I run resistor plugs AND resistor caps the spark is noticably weaker, has anyone else noticed this?

When i first got the 400 it had 5k caps and R plugs, spark was blah and orangish. Went to non R and get a nice blue crisp spark.

The Haynes book says "R" plugs for UK bikes - but nothing about caps.

So I dug out the Clymer; it has a special section for the later (FJ and XJ600) bikes.

Found out all sorts of interesting stuff about your bike, like the fact that the #2 carb has a different needle than the rest, and the #2 and #3 exhaust cam lobes have slightly more lift than cylinders #1 and #4. The "belt drive" shock adjuster is cool too.

Not one WORD about spark plug type.

Throw a set of D8EA's in there and see how it runs.

for what it's worth, i tried to get some non-resistor caps for my friends bike and got nothing but a bunch of grief, run arounds and "i don't think you know what you're talking about" from a bunch of local dealerships.
