Someone local is selling a XJ1100 that has sat for over 20 years in an unheated garage. Despite being complete, they really don't know much about the history of the bike other than "its always been in there". Is it safe to assume that bringing this bike back to life would be a major endeavor from a labor and financial standpoint? I've restored a couple of xj650's over the years and know what can happen after a bike has sat for just a few years. I'm not familiar with the XJ1100 and was curious how desirable this bike is and what additional work would be involved based on its complexities over the XJ650. Any guesstamates of what a fair price would be?

    Thx

How much are they asking for it? Getting the XJ1100 back on the road is not much different from getting the XJ650's restored. With sitting twenty years you will need to go through everything. Figure on $600 to $800 to get it back on the road.

As far as what to offer, a good running bike can be about $2000 but a non-running bike that has sat that long $200 to $500 depending on condition. Find out why it has sat for so long. Sometimes they get put away because of the second gear slipping. If that is the case go to the lower end. the fix is doable but it involves flipping the bike or removing the engine (splitting the case is not necessary).

Personally I like the size and look of the XJ1100 (I have two that I am restoring) just don't pay more than YOU feel it's worth.

$1 per cc for stock running bikes of the era with good compression in decent condition. For this non-runner (uncertain mill) in decent condition + a clear title i agree with t-coop i'd offer $500. If you decide it wouldn't be cost effective to recommission it you'd make the $500 back in parts. I'd like to have one (or a nice XS1100). My 650 for zipping around the city (saving $ at the pump). The 1100 for the visiting family tour.
