Has anyone experimented with other gas toanks for the XJ 650? I have a 1980 and would like to do a cafe treatment, but cannot find any source which makes a tank for this specific model. Otherwise I would like to convert a triumph style tank.

the triumph tanks use a different style for the front tank bushings, i would think using a modified front rubber setup would work on the xj, you might have to cut off your stock front tank mounts though, i believe the tank from my ct175 would fit on the xj, as well as the honda cb series tanks. i can check the inner distance on the tanks to make sure you can squeeze them around the frame if you want. :)
You should post some pics of your kaff racer project, id like to see what your going to use for a seat/tail. :D

    Hoobatech,

Thanks for the offer to check measurements, this would be helpful - please do at your convenience. I was quite certain the triumph tank would be a stretch, but would like to use a tank that is scalloped and would look good with the knee pads.

I should have the bike in a week or two - just bought it. It appears pretty much stock. I found an XS 650 pictured on Omars Gallery on his website. This owner had an upholstery shop re-contour the foam to give it a "cafe" look without having to reconfigure rear fenders and rails. If I can achieve this, I will likely just remove the grab rail to clean up the look.

If I did my copy/past right, this is the look I am going for.

    Thanks for your advice.
