I just got my bike, XJ700, running the way I like it, except there is one minor problem.

When it is fully warmed up, shifting into 2nd is rough. It feels as if there is something catching before the gears engage. At times, I also experience a rougher than normal downshift into first.

Is this an indication of something? When I had everything apart over the weekend I adjusted the clutch cable so that it's guitar string tight (per Rick's posts). Keep in mind, when the bike is still warming up/cold, this problem does not show itself.

I've been reading up on posts that have relevance to my issue, and am starting to wonder if my oil is affecting the clutch.

I currently use the motorcycle specific Valvoline 20w50 and have been riding my bike in 45 - 55 degree weather. As far as I understand, this oil is fine for the temperature range.

Also, as additional info, the rough shift tends to happen when I am flying along on the bike (6-9k RPM, fast shifts), however, most, and the keyword is MOST, of the time when I am shifting in the 4 - 6k RPM range, the shift is smooth, or just slightly rough.

Hope someone has some input on this.

I believe the manual says to use 10w30 up to 60 degrees but I can't imagine you would see that much difference as close as you are to 60 degrees.

I also notice this issue when I am revving really high. I figured it just wasn't meant to go that close to redline in first.

gurgie - the thing is, sometimes it's rough even at lower RPM. Granted, it's not as rough, but still enough where I can feel it "push" back against my foot.

midnightblu - let me know if the oil change solves your problem.
