finally got to work on the new xj...oil and filter change, plug change...somebody was def tweaking this before me(braided front brake lines, pods, in line fuel filter, no fuse box, perma coil on 2 spark plugs)

any who, did my changes charged the battery nothing but lights when I hit start...tap on the Solenoid and she trys to start then dies very quickly like juice stopped flowing did this a few times. sounded ok like if i could get in trying more then a second would have flipped over.

Solenoid look "rigged" as well with some sodder on it anything else I should check or replace?

A multimeter is a real good tool to have right now. If you happen to have one clip the leads to the battery and see what your static voltage is. If your battery is good it should be around 12.5 - 13.5 volts. Now check the voltage when you try to start. If the voltage drops way off like under 8 volts the battery is toast. If the voltage stays the same (12.5 to 13.5)remove and clean all of the battery connections. It is normal to get a slight voltage drop when you crank the engine. The better the battery the more voltage you will have to crank and power your ignition system. AS far as the lights go. If you have the original fuse box, get rid of it like the plague. Charcal has real nice fuse boxes or you can do what I did and install inline fuse holders that use ATC style fuses. Easy to do and fuses are available almost anywhere. Good luck and let us know what you find.
