    Hi,

Finally got to the test ride stage after lots of work and have fallen at the first hurdle... had to trailer the bike home today.

    The story so far:

I have an XJ 550 that was purchased in a very poor state. I assume very little maintenance had been done on it for many years.

It ran but had a bad flat spot and the pod filters fitted had tap wrapped around them to restrict the air flow, how the lat owner got it to run without an airbox!

I have gradually gone through the basic maintenance steps including: re shimming, cam chain tension, overhaul the brakes, oil change, new plugs, cars stripped, cleaned and faulty parts substituted.

The main jets were replaced to try to compensate for the pod filters and the stubby exhuast pipes but not sure they are right. I went from 112.5 to 125 as I found a post that indicated this was a good move but that was before I had decided to go for the non standard short exhaust so the jets may not be correct. I also moved the needle one notch (I think) trying to find my notes on where I got the advice to do that.

The fuel level in the bowls is now set, the carbs have been balanced with a YICS tool in place.

Current status, all spark plugs aquire so much soot that the bike grinds to a halt after a mile of running.

I am not sure where to start fixing this. Think I should get advise from someone that has an XJ 550 running well with pods and short exhausts!

    Anyone able to assist?

Being in the UK, getting a proper anything has been very difficult. In the end I gave up and modified the bike, there is no going back now as you can see from the photo!

I can't help with the issues you're having, I'm too new. I just wanted to chime and say that bike is BEAUTIFUL!

I hope you can work out the issues and ride that puppy everywhere!

Found a great long post on carbs by Chacal:

    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14692.html

If I understand correctly, I should be looking to upjet from stock on the main and pilot jets. Main from 112.5 + 4 for the pods + 2 for the exhaust - 2 correcting factor he suggests. So am I right in saying net +4 giving me 116.5?

The pilo he suggests should be +1 for each +3 of the main jet which gives me +1. Pilot is 35 stock so I interpret that as needing to try 36.

No mention seems to be made of the jet needle position though.

I am thinking to do this and then have a DYNO test to see what the results are. DOes that sound like a reasonable plan?
