OK I picked up a can of Seafoam engine treatment for my XJ. Now some members here say they use it in their and others swear it will ruin your bike if you do so. Now this where I get confused, It does say on the can that you CAN use it in your oil. So why are some members adamant that doing so will ruin you engine???

SeaFoam is nothing more than a mixture of various solvents.

You can run it through your carbs if you want; some people swear by it; I haven't had the best results so I won't.

Putting it in your crankcase is another matter. It will dilute the oil, plain and simple; and possibly mess with the chemistry of the oil as well. There are high-RPM plain bearing motors; I strongly recommend AGAINST adding anything to your oil that will thin it out or reduce its effectiveness as a lubricant. The best thing to "flush out" the motor with is a couple of "short duration" oil changes.

You don't run a motor that's had its oil thinned out by gasoline; why would you want to run it with the oil thinned out by some other solvent?

You can believe what you want to; I personally won't put anything but OIL in my crankcases.

I know what you are saying Bigfitz, thats what I find confusing. How can the manufacture say its OK to put it in your oil when you can see by reading the can that it will thin the oil!

When people do use Seafoam in their oil, it's in a car/truck, because the transmission uses it's own lubricants. Unlike a bike where the diluted oil is affecting more parts that are more precious/temperamental and the clutch.

Even then, you put it in your car oil, let it idle for a couple minutes, and then change the oil. I don't think it's a good idea for any vehicle to drive around with Seafoam there.
