I was wanting to get a different seat. My bike came with the seat with a high back and yamaha sissy bar. It's great for when my wife wants to ride but I want to get one lower profiled for when its just me. What all years and models should I be on the lookout for to use on mine? Oh, and its a 1980 XJ650 Maxim. I know the Seca seats won't convert over.

I KNOW you are probably like me and do not want to work on your bike... you want to ride it but, I found some xj stuff on jcwhitneys site.
They are pretty good looking but it requires you to tear up your old seat to staple this on. http://www.jcwhitney.com/custom-fit-spo ... 07304.jcwx
Im like you. Id love to find more seats that would fit our bikes. This is ONE option. I hope someone posts other alternatives.

That seat in the pic is the one I'm looking for. What all years and models should I look for? I have the one with the backrest that sticks up about 2 feet.

On another forum I read regularly the rage is changing the factory seat for a custom made seat. You ride in, they measure your keester, factor in your weight, etc. and presto chango you ride out with a custom seat that fits only you just right. Your bike also has snappier throttle response because your wallet is $1500 to $2000 lighter. What crap! There is a fringe group who have reported great success by going to their local upholstery shop and having the local gents rework their seats for $200 or less. The trick is to find someone who has some experience with m/c seats.

I'm good up to right around 450 miles continuous riding before I have to climb off for an hour or so. I would like to be able to ride around 750 miles in a day without pain. To this end I have found a shop in Seattle, WA who will customize my seat on a ride in basis for $425-$550 dollars. Ride in to the shop in the morning and ride out all comfy in the afternoon. The company is called Rich's Custom Seats. Check out their web site.

Thye local upholstery shop would be a great deal if they can improve your seat comfort.
