    Hey all,

My bike came rather incomplete with the old standard head light bucket thrown away and the Yamaha faring installed on it (albeit poorly done).

I don't want to keep the faring as I don't like the look.

But what are my options for putting a different headlight bucket and headlight in? Anyone gotten creative for relatively cheap?

Also, has anyone noticed that between 82 & 83 the brake distribution block is mounted differently? Learned that lesson the hard way...

the mounts can be had on e-bay for about ten $ but the tricky part it to get a headlight big enough to fit the wires in
the original was big and the wires were cramped in it
does your distribution block mount to the fairing bracket your taking off

My distribution block mounts on the bottom. I should just go take pictures of them really and post them here.

I have a friend who has offered to fab some mounting ears up to my original one. The reason why I bought another one off ebay was because the PO decided to cut one of the ears off before mounting the "new" faring. Dumb.

    I'll be back with pictures.

Ok, so on the left is my stock 83 headlight stay and the one on the right is the 81 headlight stay. If I had really looked at mine closely, I would have never bought this one.

If you look closely, it is pretty easy to tell that there are two large holes on the bottom as well as some extended area that the one on the right doesn't have. So I figure I will just sell the new one and fab up something for the old one as well as add an ear.

You might be better off cutting the remaining "ear" off and going with a set of good (i.e., cast aluminum or stainless) mounts that fit on the fork tubes. Then you can get just about any headlight bucket you want. That way you can still have your current brake distribution "log" - unless you are also going with a handlebar-mounted master cylinder and dual-line run too.
Also - don't be too hard on the PO; Yamaha dealers actually bent back the two headlight "ears" when installing the Tour Pack fairing to retain the brake MC mounts but allow more space behind the fairing.

Why not take a Cut-Off Tool ... make a clean cut ... throw the one that don't fit away ... weld the one that does fit on ... and keep-on chokin' the chicken?

    Your first chop.
You'll be cranking-out custom Bobbers before you know it.

I am going to stick with the stock brake set up for the time being. So this might be the best way to go. I don't have a cut off wheel as Rick suggested, but I have a steady hand with my hacksaw.

I will look into universal fork mounted headlight buckets. I was under the impression that stock lighting leaves a bit to be desired anyway...hmmmm...

Ahhh I see. I still don't know why you would cut off an ear. Heaven forbid you might want to go back to stock some day.

The stock headlight is not too bad if all the wiring/connectors/relays are good (replaceable H-4 bulb). The OEM driving light is only 35W so a good LED unit would be tons better...
You just need to be careful to get fork mounts that mount the bucket far enough away from the brake MC so the back of the bucket clears. Check some of the other "Seca" topics in the "Modified" section to see what others have done.

Well guess what I got? A dremel-like tool. Cut off the bottom part that works and used JB Weld to get the two piece together.

I chose JB Weld because this is not a stressed part of the bike. It is literally just holding the caliper in place.

Pics when it is all bonded up nice!

Check J&P Cycles, they have some good deals on aftermarket headlights. Might have to do some mods.

my question is what do guys do with all the wiring shoved into the stock headlight bucket when they go with a differnt headlightt? I took my stock one off and have a round one to put on, but once I saw all the crap shoved in there I just stopped progress and stared at it :D What am I going to do with all of that?

I haven't figured that out quite yet. But I have read that some people have simply shortened the whole harness a bit. I am probably going to just wrap it up like a hose and zip tie it somewhere. Of course, that does not mean I will have to change my course of action once I get in there. I know there is a hell of a lot of wires there.

You can stuff them under the fusebox/idiot light box or run them under the fuel tank.

get a bullet headlight if you like the look, there is plenty of room in them to put the wires back into one of them
