my bike is an xj550j. does anyone know if a service manual for an xj550h would be the same or do i need the find one for the "J" 1982 model instead of the "H" 81. I missed the chance to get on for the 82 and now have found one for the 81.

Don't quoate me but, probably the differences between the '81 and '82 were released in an addendum to the '81 manual.

I have two 550 Secas, one is an "H" ('81) one is a "K" ('83.) Other than the shape of the clutch cover, I cannot find ANY differences between the two. That's because other than color and some front brake caliper details (on only the Max,) all 550s were the SAME same for all 3 years they were made.

Just make sure whatever book you DO get has the Maxim supplement in it. The factory 550 book is Seca-based, and has an addendum that covers just the things that are different on the Max (like cable routing.) They keep showing up on eBay, so you'll find one in short order. I paid $15 for mine, it needed a new binder and there are a few grubby fingerprints in it.

ya, that's kinda what i was thinking. I missed the chance to grab one on ebay cuz i was sick and forgot to up my bid. Now i found one for an 81 it says XJ550H/XJ550RH so i'm hoping it has both. If not i can figure out the just maxim stuff. I just need something to check the basics against.

is it worth getting the supplementry manual for the maxim if i don't have the regular one? That's what the one i found is. 20 bucks don't sound bad tho. Or should i go with a yamaha combined xj550 H/RH manual. Maybe both?

The original factory manual should be the "combined" manual including the Max supplement. They're not hard to find. I don't think Yamaha ever published an "official" "J" or "K" series manual, the H/RH manual is it for the 550s.
