Even the middle gear should be quiet, I would be concerned if I could hear it riding down the road.

We must have a lot of concerned XJ750's riders here, then, because a lot of people talk about their middle gear "whistle" as being quite noticeable (and normal). Mine certainly is noticeable.

Does this situation exist on any of the chain drive bikes, though? I had though it was only the shaft drive ones that exhibit it. Is it only the shaft drive models that don't use a primary chain?

The 550's have a primary chain, so they don't whine... they have their own unique rattle at idle, though. Scared the hell out of me till Fitz explained it.

The crank to basket gears on the 650s and the 750s are cut straight.... Straight gears are noisy. Hypoid gears are quiet, but are a lot less forgiving, and require special lube.

The primary drive (the link between the crankshaft and transmission) on many Yamahas is a straight cut gearset. These gears make a whistle noise that is similar to thousands of crickets chirping and it is entirely normal. The RPM and volume tends to vary from motorcycle to motorcycle.

The XJ550 uses a chain primary drive. No crickets.

Noise in the shaft drive is either clunks (universal joint) or a moaning sound (bearings). These sounds are not normal and indicate wear/failure.

When coasting in neutral, you have 2 bevel gear sets, ten straight cut gears meshed and spinning, and at least seven bearings, and a speedo cable. Maybe more bearings.

I hope that narrows it down- - :p

Do you hear a whine or a rumble? Rumble is bad.

"Doctor, it only hurts when I go like this."

    "Don't go like that."

That being the case, how in the heck did you DISCOVER this?
