Yup. Bike started clunking one morning and within 5 minutes it got to the point where it was locking up. Luckily stopped right at a garage and the owner lent me some tools as I thought it was brake shoes delaminating....

When I found out the brake shoes were fine, i proceeded to look else where, which was when i pulled the rubber boot back and a handful of metal pieces fell out.

Called a tow truck and took her home. I believe it's time for an upgrade and retire this to a summer bike. It has been my only way of getting around for the past year and put on over 20000km.

But for now, will someone tell me how to get that shaft out? do I have to take the entire swingarm assembly off? doesn't look like the universal joint will fit through the narrow bit.

    Thanks!

You have to pull the swingarm.

    Yep.

Not as difficult as it might seem; remember these bikes are from a time when they were still built to come apart and be fixed.

But you will need a service manual lest you tempt early failure of the replacement parts.

Consider picking up a whole final drive from a junkyard (breaker?) or eBay; or from this site. Somebody's bound to have a whole spare serviceable assembly...

Please add your (basic is fine, or clever) location to your profile and some bike info to your sig; I get the feeling you're not in the USA.

Yea I got a CBR929rr for dirt cheap. I wanted something fuel injected.

So now I have some time to tear the rear end appart.

What else should I do while i'm at it?

I havn't had a chance to REALLY look at it real good yet, but I'm hoping that the transmission side of the shaft is all good..... Does the shaft go in like a cv shaft would go into a transaxle? splines and whatnot?

It's pretty easy to pull the rear arm off, but the trick will be putting it back together and get the correct tension on the swing arm bolts while having the swing arm correctly aligned. Then again, getting the spring on the rubber boot correctly may be the bigger trick. But have no fear, a little patience and common sense and you'll get both done correctly. The torque spec for the swing arm bolt is about 4 ft-lbs.
The locknut is torqued to about 6 ft-lbs. I referenced these numbers from a manual and converted them to foot pounds, but if someone thinks I'm wrong please correct me.

I have spares - if you can't find locally.

There is no alignment on the swingarm that I remember.
    And 4 ft/ lbs doesn't sound right and 6 ft/lbs isn't right for sure
