I just took the engine out of my 82 xj650 to replace the neutral switch. and all went well until... I tried to start it without the air box on and the thing starts going 8 and 9000 rpms without going down! I can't find anything mechanically wrong with it... the throttle cable slides and the lever sits down fine on the carbs... (which BTW I never touched the cards them selfs) Could it be electrical (electrical tach.)

To make High-rpm's ... The THROTTLES MUST BE OPEN.

    Unhook the Throttle Cable
    Back-Off the Idle Adjust Rod
Close the Individual Throttles by closing them at the Sync Screw.

    The Throttles are OPEN
You cant make over 5000 rpms without Open Throttles.

Check your idle adjuster - these engines can go sky high with even a little bit of adjustment/movement - really sensitive!

When you re-set your idle, make sure it's completely reassembled as far as the breathers and such go. My xj650 won't hardly even run without the breathers. Put them in, runs like a top. Just a pointer.
