hey guys, i just put some pod filters on my 82 550 maxim, i also had to put a pod crankcase filter on. the crankcase filter came with a little bottle of filter oil and the directions expressed great importance on oiling the filtering material. my carb pods came with no oil or instructions. i just want to know if i should oil the carb filters and how important any of this is thanks

There are two different kinds of air filters that apply to motorcycles. The first is the dry type filter and the second is the wet type filter. The dry type will most likely look like a stock air filter from a car or what you had on your bike to begin with. Wet type filters can be either foam or cotton, with the cotton looking a lot like your dry type when it is dry. Wet type filters need oil to filter out dirt. That is how they work.

More information about your pods would be helpful. However, it is my belief that pod filters are very likely to be wet type filters, as they are reuseable, unlike dry type filters.

So, if your pods are marketed as "clean and reuse", then they are wet type and need oil.
If they are cheap and meant to be disposed of, they are likely dry type and should NOT be oiled.
If they are foam, then they need oil as well.
