Good evening. I didn't see a new comers forum, perhaps I missed it so Hi I just acquired a 1981 XJ 650 Maxim and i'm brand new to bikes but not new to tinkering with electrical and mechanics. So I'm sure with some guidance I can figure things out. I am trouble shooting my signals right now. The previous owner had installed l.e.d front turn signals but no resistors so I took that out of the equation and hooked up the oem ones and so far the switch is sending power and turning the light indicated on but no flash. Is it as simple as the flash relay being bad? The lights illuminate just fine but won't flash. Also where is the auto cancel box located?, I found the 3 pin relay(at least the relay I found clicks 1 time when the switch is activated) but not the cancel box. Any guidance would be wonderful. Thanx, also here is a couple pictures of the bike just cause.

In your photo, it looks like the rear flashers are missing. Nothing will blink unless both bulbs (front and rear) are working. I believe they are 23 watt each. BA15s bayonet base.

Looks like a bike with potential! Is it otherwise in operating condition?

For new folks (I'm still absorbing information myself) there's a bunch of links in the DIY How-to page, and the XJ4Ever - Supporting Vendor link at the top is both a parts catalog and the lower half of the page is tons of tech tips that are well worth reading to get you started.

Yeah, the dude I got it from took all the factory lights off but still had them so I hooked them all back up stock style and still no blinking just illumination.

It is, motor rebuild, carb rebuild and whatever they need to do to the carb to run the airpod air filters, I think bigger jets? After market exhaust as well I believe. She runs like a dream just gotta get the little details ie. lights mirrors sorted and she's road ready.

The bulbs need to be 27 watt. Anything lower will not heat the bi-metal strip in the Yamaha relay enough for the flasher to function.
The self-canceling unit is under the fuel tank. It's about 4" long and rectangular.

So after much internet scouring for wiring diagrams and many curse words. The culprit was no ground to the flasher relay harness. I have swapped the relay for an LED friendly one properly grounded the relay and now flashy flashy.
