I'm having starter issues with my Seca 550, now, but she'll fire right up when I short the solenoid. This means it's the solenoid that's bad, not the starter, correct?

    Thanks in advance...

solenoid, or the wires that make it work. Does it click when you push the button

Also quick check the lead from the (+) battery terminal through the solenoid to the bolt through the starter case. The bolt will ground the starter if it touch the case. Probably not the problem but i'd check it anyway while you're there. I agree with Polock; sounds like the solenoid.

You can hear a very faint click when you press the button. Leads are secure, so I guess it is the solenoid? Better than having to replace the starter or put new brushes in it, I guess.

    Thanks again.

My buddy sold me a used solenoid for less than half of what the local Yamaha dealer wanted. I wired it in tonight and it fired up twice in a row. Guess that was it.

    For now.

The "real" replacement is solid-state. The original has contact points inside that get carboned up.

Since you insist on riding this bike before it's truly ready, have you pulled the rear wheel and checked for: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html I did the article because I discovered the issue on my 550 Seca. I know you have new shoes "at the ready" but if the ones that are in there now are falling apart, you're playing with fire unnecessarily.

So would the part I was quoted a price on at the dealer be the solid state version, or just NOS?

Also...I wonder if the solenoid I got from my buddy is solid state? It's about half as deep as the stocker, but looks the same, otherwise. It came from some kind of Honda.

Guess you might have missed it in my 'barn find' thread...

The brakes both front and rear have been completely rebuilt, fitz. Brand new shoes 'installed' on the rear, as per your previous suggestion. I took your advice very seriously. Good advice!

Just because their solid state replacement doesn't make them better, just cheaper to make.
You can get a solenoid for a lawn tractor at a lawn mower shop and be happy for years

Hopefully that'll be the case with the Honda solenoid I got from my buddy. It was clearly much newer than the stocker from the Seca, at least.
